Skye - Saturday

Today was our Skye day. We spent the day touring the Isle of Skye enjoying its many spectacular views and scenery.

We breakfasted at the Uig Hotel, leaving a trail of destruction.

First we went to the Quiraing Lookout. Even the drive up was captivating on narrow roads through the highland sheep.

I must say the view from the Quiraing Lookout is one of the most spectacular opportunities to see Scotland’s amazing landforms that we’ve encountered. Absolutely outstanding. I’ll let the photos tell the story.

From the Quiraing Lookout we headed around to the east coast of Skye and travel down stopping at a few of the scenic lookouts along the coast. Again I'll let the photos tell the story.

Michael had raved about the Old Man of Stohr, and his photos certainly looked spectacular, so we thought we would head there next. Unfortunately, when we got there the clouds had rolled in over the hills and while occasionally we saw glimpses of parts of the area, most of it was in the clouds. That, combined with the fair climb involved, meant that we didn’t really get too enthused about climbing. Still, from the photo, you can see it’s pretty spectacular countryside.

From the Old Man we headed down to the town of Portree and had a bit of a wander around it. Portree is the largest town on Skye and was a originally a really beautiful little fishing village, but obviously it’s grown a bit over the years. The harbour is a very pleasant spot, and we sat and had some fish and chips on the waterfront.

From Portree we headed down to the Neist Point Lookout and enjoyed the view from there. The only issue was that it was blowing about 1,000,000 miles an hour and Leanne nearly went over the edge a couple of times - OK maybe not, but the waterfall was blowing up the hill!

We had thought that we might go back to the Old Man, thinking that the clouds might have cleared. But, from what we could see, the high hilltops were still covered in cloud, so we didn’t bother.

So we headed home for a bit of relax admiring our view and another lovely dinner at the Uig Hotel.

Tomorrow we head out to look for look for Nessie at Loch Ness - we’ll see how we go.

  1. Really does look like the “wilds of Scotland”! Good to see there is this kind of country left in spades in some corners of the UK. BnD
